Interior Ministry Records 6,932 Violations by Drivers of Two- and Four-Wheeled Vehicles, 503 Criminal Charges Filed

Enhanced checks conducted throughout North Macedonia from 18.05.2026 to 31.07.2026 focused on riders of bicycles with auxiliary motors, mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles. The operations were carried out by the Traffic Affairs Department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

During these checks, 6,932 offenses committed by drivers of these categories of vehicles were recorded, while cyclists were found responsible for an additional 33 offenses.

According to Interior Ministry data, the highest number of violations was recorded by the Skopje Police Department, with 2,146 cases. It was followed by the Bitola Police Department with 992, the Veles Police Department with 856, the Kumanovo Police Department with 583, the Shtip Police Department with 544, the Tetovo Police Department with 541, the Ohrid Police Department with 420 and the Strumica Police Department with 327 offenses. The Mobile Road Traffic Safety Unit recorded 556 cases.

Of the total violations recorded, 5,678 involved driving these vehicles without wearing a protective helmet.

The measures prescribed by the Law on Road Traffic Safety were taken for each offense. In addition, another 15,715 offenses were recorded during the checks. Criminal charges were filed against 503 drivers under Article 297-a of the Criminal Code.

The Interior Ministry announced that the enhanced checks will continue throughout the country, with the aim of improving traffic safety and enforcing road rules. The institution urged riders of bicycles, bicycles with auxiliary motors, mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles, quadricycles and light electric vehicles to act responsibly, comply with regulations, wear protective helmets as required and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other psychoactive substances.
