In-flight alarm: 67-year-old restrained with duct tape and chains after aggressive behavior

An American Airlines flight was forced to change course and make an emergency landing in Baltimore after a 67-year-old passenger from Arizona allegedly displayed aggressive behavior on board.

The incident occurred on flight AA 618, which had departed from Dallas and was bound for Newark, the FBI and American Airlines said.

Juan Mejia, a passenger and former law enforcement officer, said tensions began after about three-quarters of the flight had passed. According to him, the 67-year-old insulted staff members and other passengers, used offensive and racist language, and made derogatory comments toward several women seated in the row behind him.

Mejia and another passenger, Richard Olenick, said they decided to intervene when Arthur Ludin became physically aggressive. He was restrained in his seat with duct tape, while his hands were secured with chains.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft was diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Airport at around 22:15. The FAA has also launched an investigation into the incident.

The Maryland State Police announced that Ludin was arrested as soon as the plane touched down at Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Mejia and Olenick remained beside the 67-year-old until officers entered the aircraft and took him into custody.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police said the 67-year-old was charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault in connection with actions that occurred during the flight.

After Ludin’s arrest, the plane resumed its journey and arrived normally in Newark, according to American Airlines.

The FBI is continuing its investigation into the incident that occurred on board the aircraft.
