The incident occurred during Flight 2398, which had departed from Atlanta and was bound for Dallas International Airport. There were 133 people on board.

While communicating with air traffic control, the pilot reported that a fire had broken out in the rear of the cabin and that the flight crew was working to extinguish it.

He later stated that between four and five passengers might have been burned by the laptop, explaining that the device had been placed in isolation inside the cabin.

Information about several people suffering burn injuries was not confirmed later.

The plane landed safely in Dallas. Despite the incident, the landing at the airport was completed without problems.

The airport administration said that one passenger received medical assistance at the scene and then left, as no further treatment was necessary.

American Airlines confirmed that the plane arrived safely after smoke was reported coming from a passenger’s electronic device. The company praised the crew’s response, highlighting its swift intervention, the isolation of the device and the successful control of the situation.

The incident has revived discussions about the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries, which are used in laptops, mobile phones and other electronic devices.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns that these batteries can overheat under certain circumstances and cause fires during flights.

One of the greatest risks is associated with “thermal runaway,” a process in which a battery’s temperature rises uncontrollably.

The FAA explains that this phenomenon can occur without warning and may be caused by battery damage, overheating, contact with water, overcharging or unsafe packaging.

To limit these risks, commercial flights follow special rules governing the size and transport of lithium batteries.

According to FAA data, at least 56 incidents involving lithium batteries on flights have been reported since the beginning of 2026, including cases of smoke, fire and overheating.

A similar case was recorded in February, when an Alaska Airlines plane traveling to Wichita, Kansas, returned to Seattle after a passenger’s device battery overheated and caught fire.

The latest incident on the American Airlines flight did not cause serious injuries, but once again highlighted the risk that electronic devices and their batteries can pose in the confined space of an aircraft cabin.
