Hoxha: Investments in gas power plants improve air quality and energy security

Modern and more efficient technologies are essential for strengthening energy security and improving air quality, said Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Muamet Hoxha at the inauguration ceremony of the new cogeneration plant operated by “Tessa Energy” in Skopje’s Chair municipality.

Hoxha said the green transition does not mean only setting goals, but also taking concrete measures, particularly in Skopje, where the fight against air pollution remains an important issue. According to him, investments in newer and more productive equipment are part of this approach.

During the event, at which Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and company representatives also spoke, it was announced that the first phase of the investment is worth 2.5 million euros.

The plant consists of two high-efficiency gas engines. They simultaneously generate 2.1 MW of electricity and 2.6 MW of thermal energy, while the overall energy utilization efficiency reaches up to 90 percent.

An important part of the project is the use of heat generated during electricity production. Through the “Energy Ecolink” system, this heat is used to heat water for around 500 households and 14 institutions in the municipalities of Chair and Butel.

Minister Hoxha described the investment as evidence of the role that energy and industry stakeholders can jointly play in creating environmental improvements. He also said the project demonstrates the potential for the private sector to shift toward cleaner and more efficient solutions.

The ceremony also marked the launch of the second phase, which includes the construction of a new cogeneration power plant with an installed capacity of 10.5 MW.

The investment is expected to help strengthen the district heating network and increase domestic electricity production.

“Projects of this kind show that economic growth, energy security and environmental protection can develop in parallel, delivering tangible results for citizens,” Hoxha said, wishing the project every success in its completion.
