House fire in England kills mother and three children, leaving family devastated

Elisha Brabin, 36, and her three children died after their home in Bootle, Merseyside, England, caught fire. The other victims were Leo Brabin, 16, Ellis Brabin, 8, and Prudence Brabin, 7.

Firefighters found all four in an upstairs bedroom at the house in Stone Square. Fire crews were called at around 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22. A fifth person was taken to hospital with burns.

An investigation by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service determined that the blaze began with an electrical incident that triggered a process known as “thermal runaway” in a lithium-ion battery. During this process, the battery generates more heat than it can safely release, causing its temperature to rise rapidly and uncontrollably.

Authorities have not disclosed which device the battery belonged to. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric bikes and scooters.

Kev Johnson, head of prevention at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, described the incident as tragic. He said the flames spread with such speed and intensity that firefighters and medical teams were unable to save the family. Johnson stressed that the tragedy highlights the real dangers of lithium-ion batteries.

The fire service has urged the public to use only batteries and chargers recommended by the manufacturer and to follow the operating instructions. People should stop using a battery immediately if it swells, makes unusual noises, emits a strong smell or smoke, or fails to charge properly.

Fire service figures show that 150 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries were recorded in Merseyside between April 2023 and August 2026. Five people died in these incidents.

Relatives described Elisha as a devoted mother whose children were her “whole world.” They said Leo, Ellis and Prudence were deeply loved and that their deaths had devastated them. The family said the loss of Elisha and her three precious children, who were taken far too soon, had broken their hearts; the pain was unimaginable, and its effects would be felt forever.

After the incident, neighbours launched a fundraising campaign to support the family, raising more than £12,000. Organiser Loti Nambombe said the community wanted to help with funeral expenses or other needs.

Neighbours said they rushed into the street as soon as they heard screams during the fire and tried to help. Some attempted to enter the house, find ladders or break windows to get the family members out.

Flowers, candles, toys and photographs have been left at the scene of the tragedy in memory of the mother and her three children.
