Hoti: Political agreements can be renegotiated, but the Constitution cannot be touched

Democratic League of Kosovo MP Avdullah Hoti commented on developments surrounding the election of the new president, stressing that a political agreement reached by party leaders does not bind members of the Assembly.

According to Hoti, such an agreement cannot serve as an argument for asking deputies to vote, especially in the case when the candidate envisaged in the agreement has withdrawn from the race.

He underlined that an agreement between two party leaders cannot turn into a binding instruction for Assembly representatives.

Hoti recalled that the Constitution clearly stipulates that deputies, as representatives of citizens, cannot be subjected to any obligation.

He declared that political agreements can be revised and that the Democratic League of Kosovo is ready to vote for a candidate from its ranks, considering this necessary to preserve the balance of powers.

“How can anyone rely on an agreement when the person involved in it has withdrawn from the race? An agreement between two party leaders cannot turn into an order for Assembly deputies,” Hoti wrote on Facebook.

He added that new elections are his choice, instead of political submission, stressing that political agreements can be negotiated, but not the Constitution of Kosovo.
