Haxhiu calls for a strategy to support KLA leaders on appeal

Kosovo Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu has called on institutions to focus on a strategy for the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which should support them during their appeal proceedings in The Hague.

Following today’s meeting of the Assembly Presidency, Haxhiu said the Kosovo Government had established a working group to draft the strategy. She called for the work to be carried out with care, seriousness and professionalism.

Speaking about the law on the Specialist Chambers, Haxhiu said she had referred its return to the Legislation Committee, which has four weeks to consider it. She said she would meet the committee chair today to learn his position.

According to Haxhiu, legal experts have two interpretations of the procedure after the law is returned for a third reading. One group believes the Assembly can only vote for or against it, while the other thinks amendments can also be made to the law. She said it is up to the Legislation Committee to review the matter.

Haxhiu added that her previously stated position on the issue is based solely on a Constitutional Court ruling in the case of President Atifete Jahjaga.
