Has national security been compromised? SPAK places SHISH director Vlora Hyseni under house arrest in an unprecedented case in Albania’s history

The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) issued a house-arrest order this Tuesday for the head of the State Intelligence Service (SHISH), Vlora Hyseni, and suspended her from duty.

Journalist Klodiana Lala reported that the measure has not yet been enforced because Hyseni is not in Albania. According to reports, the order was issued as part of the investigation into the AKSHI case.

At a time when SPAK has issued this security measure against the top official responsible for Albania’s state security, the question naturally arises as to whether national security has been compromised.

“This is the first case in which a senior official has been subjected to such a security measure. While the head of SHISH is believed to have Albanian secrets in her possession, she has ended up under an arrest order. It has not been confirmed whether this security measure has been formally communicated to her. She is the first senior official in this position to face such accusations amid suspicions raised by SPAK,” journalist Klodiana Lala said.

It should be recalled that another precedent was set in the case of Bashkim Gazidede, who left Albania in 1997, although for other reasons.
