Haradinaj: The Winning Party Did Not Receive a Majority; Joint Decision-Making Is Needed

Ramush Haradinaj, former leader of the AAK, has said that the outcome of the elections did not give the winning party enough seats to govern alone. According to him, the circumstances require the government and opposition to work together in the decision-making process.

Speaking to the media, Haradinaj said that acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti has so far failed to present a model for joint decision-making. He said Kurti has only offered the opposition the opportunity to become part of the government.

“Citizens have voted and the people have delivered their verdict. We are now elected MPs, while the election result requires joint decision-making. Citizens did not give the winning party the necessary majority,” Haradinaj said.

He argued that, based on the election result, one of the two most important state offices — prime minister or president — should be entrusted to the opposition.

“The prime minister is the main office, as they lead the government, while the president holds one of the two highest offices. Based on the result, one of these two posts belongs to the opposition. If the election is interpreted according to democratic logic, this should be the conclusion reached by the winner. But if one acts according to the logic of a regime, as Kurti is doing, then joint decision-making is not sought,” he said.

According to Haradinaj, Kurti intends to retain all the main offices for himself while offering the opposition only a role within the executive.

Haradinaj stressed that the opposition could contribute to establishing the institutions, but not simply by becoming part of the government.

“I do not believe the opposition serves Kosovo by joining Kurti’s government solely for political gain. It can help the country by taking part in decision-making. The Alliance is not merely seeking posts or benefits from power, but if we are given the opportunity to play a role in helping Kosovo, then we are ready,” Haradinaj said.
