Greek 29-year-old director dies in accident, family aims to complete her final film

A road accident in Athens claimed the life of Greek director and screenwriter Maria Tsioli, who was just 29 years old. Her death cut short a promising career in cinema.

Maria Tsioli was among the victims of the crash that occurred on Alexandras Avenue. The tragic news shocked her family, friends and colleagues, with whom she had worked over the years.

Although she was young, Tsioli had established herself on the Greek film scene. Her works had also been screened at major international festivals.

The director had planned to begin filming her new project, “Perasma” (“The Passage”), in the autumn of this year. The film would be set in the Agrafa area, mainly in Megala Vraggiana, and would tell the story of an adolescent shepherd living in a village.

Following her death, her family and collaborators have decided to try to ensure that the film is made and that the artistic vision Maria had developed is pursued.

Alexis Kardabikis, the mayor of Agrafa, announced the news and said that he had communicated with Tsioli and producer Spyros Skandalos during the project’s preparation phase.

According to Kardabikis, the municipality will provide all the necessary support for the film to be made in accordance with the way the director had imagined and dreamed of it.
