Greece opens call for citizenship for citizens of North Macedonia with Greek roots

The Greek embassy in Skopje has issued an official invitation to all residents of North Macedonia who have Greek ancestry and meet the criteria to obtain Greek citizenship.

In its call, the diplomatic mission highlights: “Greece loves you. Deepen your relationship with your motherland,” referring to the historical and family ties of these individuals.

According to the communication, interested persons can learn about the legal requirements, the documentation to be submitted, and the initial steps for application through the blood lineage, i.e., through parents or grandparents with Greek identity. The process begins at the Greek consulate covering the applicant’s area of residence, where additional guidance is also provided.

The embassy urges citizens to carefully review the legislation and confirm if they fall within the prescribed categories, also directing them to official websites for more detailed explanations.

This move by Athens comes after a similar model that Sofia has been implementing for years. As reported, a considerable number of residents from North Macedonia have already secured Bulgarian travel documents, claiming Bulgarian origin to obtain citizenship rights.
