Greece Follows Bulgaria’s Example, Invites North Macedonian Citizens of Greek Descent to Apply for Citizenship

Greece has launched a special public campaign targeting North Macedonian citizens of Greek descent who may meet the criteria for obtaining Greek citizenship.

“Greece needs you. Strengthen your ties with your homeland,” reads the announcement published by the Greek Embassy in Skopje, INA reports.

According to the announcement, interested individuals can obtain information about the criteria, required documents and key stages of applying for Greek citizenship on the basis of ancestry, namely through parents or grandparents of Greek origin.

The process begins at the Greek consulate responsible for the applicant’s area of residence, where citizens can also receive the necessary guidance on how to proceed.

The embassy is inviting interested individuals to check whether they meet the legal requirements and to consult official sources for further information.

The initiative by Athens comes after a similar practice that Bulgaria has implemented for years. As is known, thousands of North Macedonian citizens have already obtained Bulgarian passports after declaring their Bulgarian origin in order to qualify for citizenship./INA/
