Greece: Gasoline surpasses 2 euros per liter, another hike expected in September

The price of gasoline in Greece has surpassed the 2-euro per liter threshold, while market signals point to further increases in the coming days. The national average for unleaded gasoline is 2 euros and 1.5 cents per liter, while diesel sells on average for 2 euros and 2 cents.

Fuel station representatives say the wave of price hikes is not over. In the past week alone, refineries have raised diesel prices by 11 to 12 cents and gasoline by 6 to 7 cents. Part of this increase has not yet been reflected at the consumer level, but is expected to appear at the pumps in the coming days.

The main concern is linked to September 1, as the current government support measures expire on August 31. If they are not extended, the Federation of Fuel Sellers warns that gasoline could reach 2 euros and 20 cents per liter, while diesel could hit 2 euros and 25 cents.

This increase comes at a time when Greek households are still facing high living costs. Inflation in the country reached 3.4% in July, while energy and service costs continue to weigh on family budgets. The effects of fuel prices, however, are not limited to drivers.

The rising cost of diesel increases transportation costs and could further impact food and other product prices. The government is assessing the possibility of extending the diesel subsidy beyond the end of August. Meanwhile, attention is focused on the Thessaloniki International Fair, taking place in early September, where Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to present a new package of relief measures for families, pensioners, the middle class, and small businesses.
