Greece Cuts Prices on More Than 1,660 Products for Families in Need, with Discounts of Up to 35%

Starting today, shoppers at Greek supermarkets will find more than 1,660 products at reduced prices. The list of items included in the initiative is expected to soon exceed 1,700.

The agreement reached between the government and local businesses aims to ease the burden on families struggling with the rising cost of living. The program includes food products such as flour, milk and meat, as well as detergents, shampoo, baby diapers and school supplies.

The average price reduction is expected to be around 7%, while the discounts will remain in effect for between two and four months, depending on the product. For some items, particularly school supplies, the discount will be greater and may reach as much as 35% in certain cases.

Items covered by the agreement will be identified by a special label in participating supermarkets. Consumers will also be able to check them on the “PosoKanei”–“HowMuch” online platform. Consumer organizations have clarified that the measure does not apply to all products in a category, but only to the specific items covered by the agreement.

Meanwhile, the Greek authorities are also preparing to extend fuel subsidies. A decision is expected on extending the 10-cent-per-liter subsidy for diesel, at a time when fuel prices remain above two euros per liter.

The measures were introduced just days before the Thessaloniki International Fair. During the event, Prime Minister Mitsotakis is expected to announce a new economic package to support incomes and Greek families, which, according to reports, could be worth 1.7 billion euros.

Opposition parties, which are preparing for parliamentary elections to be held in the coming months, continue to criticize the government over its policies. Political opponents have focused particularly on the handling of rising food, fuel, electricity and housing rental costs.
