Granada in Spain rocked by 4.8-magnitude earthquake/ Three injured, property damage and evacuation at the Alhambra

Granada and its metropolitan area in Spain were hit on Tuesday morning by a 4.8-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale. The tremors caused panic among residents, property damage and minor injuries to three people.

The earthquake was recorded at 10:37 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located in the area of Gójar, while the focal depth was approximately five kilometers.

Tuesday’s tremor is part of the seismic activity that has continued in the Granada area since last Saturday.

Antonio Sant, the deputy president of Andalusia, confirmed that three people suffered minor injuries as a result of the earthquake.

One of those injured was a minor, who was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Property damage was also reported in several areas. Images shared on social media showed damaged buildings, roads and parked vehicles.

As a safety measure after the tremors, the Alhambra was temporarily evacuated. Meanwhile, many residents left buildings and took to the streets for fear of further earthquakes.

Following the main 4.8-magnitude quake, at least six aftershocks were recorded.

The strongest aftershock reached a magnitude of 4 and occurred at 10:53 a.m., with its epicenter in Churriana de la Vega. Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) said the tremor was very shallow.

A 2.9-magnitude earthquake was subsequently recorded in Pandul, another measuring 2.6 in the Las Gambas area, and a 2.8-magnitude tremor whose epicenter was in Alhendín.

The main seismic shock was felt in all four provinces of eastern Andalusia. Emergency services received around 50 calls to the 112 number, while authorities continue to monitor the situation because of the seismic activity.
