Granada in Spain hit by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake, the fourth tremor in a matter of days

The Granada area in southern Spain was hit overnight by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake.

Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) said the epicenter was located near Alhendín, in the Andalusia region. The quake’s magnitude was initially estimated at 4.8, but was later revised to 5.0.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of just 2 kilometers, caused material damage in several areas. According to emergency services, parts of frames became detached in Armilla in particular, while the facades and roofs of buildings were damaged. Many residents also reported that various objects had fallen inside their homes.

So far, however, there have been no reports of fatalities or injuries. The tremors were felt throughout Granada province, as well as in the provinces of Jaén, Almería, Málaga and Córdoba.

Six minutes after the main earthquake, another tremor measuring 2.6 was recorded, with its epicenter in Gojar.

Three other weaker earthquakes struck the area on Friday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the damage caused by the powerful tremor.
