Gjini: Kosovo is facing a severe crisis, institutions have been paralyzed

Following a meeting of the Alliance’s leadership, its chairman, Ardian Gjini, held a press conference where he spoke about the political, institutional and energy situation in Kosovo.

According to Gjini, the country is going through one of its most difficult moments, while the constitutional deadlines for establishing institutions have already passed.

“We are beyond the constitutional deadlines, and we are approaching the day when Kosovo will go beyond the constitutional deadlines for establishing democratic institutions,” Gjini declared.

The Alliance leader accused the current government of failures in the economy, education, healthcare and foreign policy. He described the situation as “institutional collapse and disrespect for the Constitution and the laws.”

Gjini said the country had entered a situation that could not be overcome without consequences, adding that the Alliance had proposed ways to overcome the political crisis.

He devoted part of his statement to energy. Gjini estimated that Kosovo should produce around 600 megawatts of electricity, which, he said, would significantly reduce its dependence on imports.

He claimed that energy purchases had become a major profiteering scheme because, as he put it, electricity was being bought at prices much higher than the cost of producing it in Kosovo.

Gjini also spoke about coal exports. According to him, Kosovo sells the raw material abroad and then imports the energy produced with that coal by countries in the region.

He accompanied these positions with accusations of mismanagement and corruption, but did not present concrete evidence for the claims during the conference.

Gjini also addressed Kosovo’s struggle for freedom and the way its history is allegedly being distorted.

He said it must not be allowed for the KLA’s war and the sacrifices of those who contributed to Kosovo’s freedom to be presented through narratives that, in his assessment, tarnish that history.

“Today we must tell ourselves and the people that our war was just. We must not allow our story of freedom to be closed off and that story to be smeared,” Gjini said.

According to him, divisions and the decline in trust in Kosovo’s institutions and values have weakened society and the state.

Regarding developments in the Assembly, the Alliance chairman described the paralysis of institutional work as one of the most serious problems in the country.

Gjini said that preventing members of parliament from carrying out their duties constituted, in his view, “the most brutal violation of the Constitution, the constitutional order and democracy in Kosovo.”

“One person alone cannot create the Constitution, cannot create elected members of parliament and cannot replace institutions,” he declared.

Speaking about governance in recent years, Gjini said Kosovo had faced “crisis, depression, fragmentation and destruction.” He attributed responsibility, as he put it, to a leader who had not had the capacity to guide the country on the right path.

Gjini stressed that the Alliance did not intend to be used to cover up the failures of other political entities.

“We were formed to cover the gaps and serve Kosovo, not the parties that fail,” he said.

He also criticized what he described as a lack of will to make decisions and complete important projects for the country.

In closing, the Alliance chairman said that the situation created was increasing citizens’ uncertainty and concern. He called for a solution to the political crisis and the functioning of Kosovo’s institutions.
