German intelligence warns of escalation with Russia, Estonia reinforces border

Germany could face the risk of being drawn into a “violent conflict” with Russia, warned the head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, Martin Jaeger. The statement was made during a public session of the Parliamentary Control Panel for the Secret Services in the Bundestag.

Jaeger said that the confrontation with Moscow has entered a new and more dangerous phase. As one of the examples of threats against Germany, he also mentioned the attempted assassination in Leipzig.

According to the head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service, Russia currently poses the most direct, widespread and concrete threat to the country.

He added that Russian secret services are operating “with great professionalism and without scruples.” For this reason, the risk that targets on German territory could be attacked remains real and imminent.

At the same time, foreign media report that Estonia has begun relocating one of its main army brigades to Jõhvi, approximately 50 kilometres from the border with Russia. The movement signals the Baltic country’s preparations for a possible scenario of aggression by Moscow.

Estonia has adopted an “active defense” strategy, which aims to halt an attack in its early stages. In addition to increasing its military presence near the border, the country is building a new base in Narva and significantly expanding its long-range strike capabilities with systems such as HIMARS and Chunmoo.
