Gashi: It is still unclear whether there is sufficient support for the Law on Fair and Adequate Representation

The Speaker of the Assembly of North Macedonia, Afrim Gashi, stated that it is currently uncertain whether there are enough votes in Parliament to pass the Law on Fair and Adequate Representation.

According to Gashi, passing legislation always requires dialogue, while meetings between MPs should serve to articulate positions and find a solution.

He stressed that talks must first be held with MPs to determine whether there is sufficient room and political will for the law to be put to a vote and subsequently implemented. Gashi said the manner in which it will be implemented must also be monitored, regardless of who is in power next year, including the current governing coalition.

Once the methodology has been adopted, the Government is expected to establish a coordinating body that will determine the precise method to be applied in each institution to achieve fair and adequate representation.

Gashi said the results of the implementation would show whether the solution is effective. If problems, shortcomings or certain anomalies arise, the parties will sit down together again to identify the law, article or element that is not producing the desired effect and amend or adjust it. He emphasized that no law has ever been perfect when first passed or remained unchanged forever.

Speaking about the possibility of early elections, Gashi said they should be held at the regularly scheduled time. According to him, this position does not stem from fear of defeat or expectations of victory, as the final result is decided by the citizens.
