From Theth, Rama Criticizes Protesters: Charlatans and Extremists Who Oppose Foreign Investment

Speaking from Theth, Prime Minister Edi Rama responded to protesters who have gathered every day for the past 52 days on the boulevard opposite the Prime Minister’s Office, demanding his resignation and the removal of the old political establishment.

During a meeting with local residents, Rama called the protesters “charlatans,” “delusional,” and “extremists,” accusing them of opposing foreign investment in Albania.

Speaking about sources of funding, the head of government said that funds come from investment and that even countries with the most advanced democracies compete to attract as much foreign capital as possible. According to him, some people in Albania oppose foreign investors and ask who the country is being sold to. In this context, Rama also mentioned investments from Qatar.

The discussion took place as residents asked him about the Mountain Package and the government’s measures against unauthorized construction in Theth. The prime minister argued that investment brings economic development, citing as an example the road project in Dukagjin, which he said would help tourism and the area’s development.

Rama announced that the government would begin construction of the Dukagjin road. He noted that the area had previously faced a lack of infrastructure, electricity, and water.

Regarding the Mountain Package, the prime minister rejected claims that it is a scheme favoring oligarchs. He said the initiative aims to resolve property ownership issues for heirs in mountainous areas.

The head of government also denied having promised, during his previous visit to Theth, that new unauthorized buildings would be legalized. According to him, the process will include only existing structures that meet the requirements set out by law.

Rama said he had not called on residents to continue building on the assumption that the structures would be legalized, as he had spoken only about buildings that existed at the time. He said that following his visit, a wave of illegal construction began, damaging the heart of Theth, while the meadow near the church was overrun by unauthorized structures. The prime minister stressed that the government could not allow the situation to continue.

Ministers Ervin Demo and Enea Karakaçi, Shkodër Mayor Benet Beci, and local officials also attended the meeting in Theth.
