From Dark Tones to Pastels: Giorgia Meloni’s Style Transformation

The gradual change in Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s appearance has drawn the attention of specialists. Her shift from dark suits and heavy boots to pastel shades, wide-leg trousers and simpler outfits is interpreted as part of a reshaping of her political image.

In 2022, when she took office, Meloni mainly chose dark-coloured clothing, which conveyed strength, authority and seriousness. Later, she increasingly appeared in beige, cream, pink and pastel suits, building a softer and more approachable profile.

Experts describe this approach as “power dressing” — using clothing to convey authority and power. The practice became particularly widespread during the 1970s and 1980s, when women were increasingly taking on leadership positions. However, Meloni is not the only political figure to turn clothing into a message.

Angela Merkel was known for her three-button jackets in different colours, while Margaret Thatcher was identified with her elegant suits, pearls and signature handbags. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum often wears clothing created by local artisans as a sign of support for indigenous communities.

Male political figures also use their appearance to communicate. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appeared mainly in tactical clothing rather than traditional suits, projecting the image of a leader at war rather than a politician detached from reality.

According to experts, Giorgia Meloni may reconsider her style again if she faces new challenges from the right wing of Italian politics.
