First round of US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland ends after 1 hour and 20 minutes, delegations move to consultations

After 1 hour and 20 minutes, the first round of talks between the United States and Iran, held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, came to an end, according to Iranian media reports.

The Fars news agency said that immediately after the meeting concluded, the delegations from both sides withdrew for internal consultations. So far, no information has been released on the outcome of the discussions.

Before the talks began, US Vice President J.D. Vance expressed confidence that a solution could be reached through diplomacy. He said President Donald Trump had given the American team full authorization to seek solutions to issues affecting the Middle East.

“President Trump has authorized us to find a diplomatic solution to a number of issues,” Vance said, underscoring that these negotiations could create opportunities for a transformation of relations in the region.

Although he described Iran as a destabilizing force in the Middle East, he said that significant progress had been recorded in diplomatic contacts over the past few hours.

Vance also added that the US administration aims to encourage a broader ceasefire in the region, including preserving the ceasefire in Lebanon.

There was no statement from the Iranian side after the meeting ended. Tehran has reiterated that any agreement with the US is tied to preserving peace in Lebanon and to Israel’s respect for the ceasefire.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said the main topic of these talks would be the situation in Lebanon. According to him, issues related to Iranian assets and oil exports would also be on the table.

Meanwhile, Fars reported, citing an Iranian military source, that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to ship navigation.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed hope that these talks would conclude with an agreement that would help peace, progress and stability in the region and beyond.
