Extreme heat disrupts 250th Independence anniversary celebrations, several U.S. states suspend July 4 activities

A heat wave has had a direct impact on Independence Day celebrations in the United States, forcing authorities in several states to cancel or halt a number of public events because of the risk posed to citizens’ health.

According to the National Weather Service, more than 165 million residents have faced very high temperatures across East Coast and Midwest areas, while in some regions the thermometer has climbed close to historic record levels. Weather conditions have been deemed dangerous, especially for activities taking place outdoors.

As a result of this situation, several parades and festive activities were canceled in states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Colorado. Among the events hit hardest by the weather was the traditional parade in Philadelphia, which is considered one of the main July 4 activities.

In Washington, DC, where events were being held for the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence, a large fair was temporarily closed after several participants showed health problems due to the high temperatures. American media reported that some people were taken by ambulance to receive medical assistance.

In Washington, DC and other cities, authorities issued warnings of high risk from extreme temperatures, urging citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, drink as many fluids as possible and limit physical activity during the hottest hours of the day.

Because of the safety measures, some official activities were postponed or held on altered schedules. Meteorologists have warned that the heat wave is expected to continue in the coming days, while in some areas the risk of severe storms remains present.
