Experts warn: Melting glaciers are increasing the risk of disasters in Nepal and Tibet

The disaster caused by the collapse of a glacier near the Nepal–Tibet border has been described by experts as a warning signal of the growing fragility of mountain areas affected by global warming.

An analysis published in the scientific journal Nature, based on assessments by international experts, emphasizes that climate change could increase the likelihood of landslides and devastating floods at high altitudes.

Landslides and flash floods along the Bhotekoshi river system have caused casualties and damage, but the full extent of the disaster is still unclear. Tens of thousands of people live in the area, which is also an important tourist destination.

Experts estimate that it will take time to determine the specific impact of global warming on the glacier’s collapse.

Göran Ekström, a geophysicist at Columbia University in New York, said that the melting of glaciers and permafrost in the Himalayas may have played a role in the event.

“Global warming is affecting high-altitude regions around the world,” said Alton Byers, a mountain geographer at the University of Colorado Boulder. According to him, such catastrophic floods are being recorded with increasing frequency.

Initial assessments indicate that the disaster was particularly difficult to predict. Researchers say it does not appear to have been caused by an earthquake, the collapse of a glacial lake or exceptionally heavy rainfall.

The leading hypothesis involves a massive landslide originating from a glacier that, until that point, had not been analyzed or monitored in detail.

Byers explains that the melting of permafrost can weaken mountains and ice masses. This can create the conditions for large landslides and cascading processes, which then cause flooding and severe damage in lower-lying areas.

One of the main conclusions drawn from this disaster is the need to increase awareness and emergency preparedness capacities in mountain regions, which are becoming increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change.

According to Byers, a considerable portion of the damage was caused to homes and buildings constructed on floodplains, areas where, experts say, construction should not have been permitted.

The event in Nepal and Tibet has once again focused attention on the threat that melting glaciers and climate change pose to communities located in the high-altitude areas of the Himalayas.
