European Greens delegation heading to Albania to follow protests: We will listen to citizens, not institutions

In the coming days, a delegation from the European Green Party will travel to Albania as part of a visit focused on the citizen protests calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the removal of the government, and environmental issues. This was announced by MEP Cristina Guarda.

According to her statement, the aim of the visit is for the European representatives to meet directly with citizens and civil society organizations in order to gain a clearer understanding of the protests taking place in the country, “without institutional mediation.”

Guarda underlines that these protests are linked to environmental protection, human rights, the fight against corruption, as well as the demand for a development model that is not based on private and speculative interests.

“We are coming to meet you and to understand directly the meaning of these protests,” her public message says.

She also stresses that Albania’s European integration should serve its citizens and improve their living conditions, while guaranteeing dignity and fundamental rights.

The MEP also notes that standards related to the environment and human rights should not be taken for granted, but must be protected and continuously strengthened.

This visit is expected to bring greater European attention to political developments and the protests in Albania. The protest will also be joined by German MEP Jutta Paulus, who has announced that she will take part in the citizens’ protest in Tirana, describing the protection of democracy, the rule of law, and the environment as a cause of particular importance.
