An EU spokesperson told the media that the Union has been informed of the decision and deemed it essential that judicial proceedings be conducted independently.
“The EU has taken note of today’s first-instance judgment in the case of the Specialist Prosecutor against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi,” the EU statement said.
According to the spokesperson, the Kosovo Specialist Chambers are handling the matter on the basis of individual criminal responsibility.
“The Kosovo Specialist Chambers are delivering justice by conducting fair, impartial and independent judicial proceedings, based on the principle of individual criminal responsibility,” the EU response stated.
After the sentencing of the four KLA members in The Hague, citizens revolted and broke the windows of the Government building.
The EU recalled that those convicted can appeal the judgment.
“Those convicted have the right to appeal the judgment before independent appeal judges in a separate Appeals Panel,” the EU spokesperson stated.
In its response, the EU called on all parties and actors in Kosovo and the region to show restraint.
“The EU calls on all parties and actors, in Kosovo and the region, for restraint. The Kosovo Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office must be able to carry out their mandate without interference,” the European Union stated.
The spokesperson emphasized that justice must take its course, which, according to him, is of particular importance for the victims.
Kosovo institutions were also reminded of their responsibility for ensuring security.
“The authorities have the responsibility to ensure the safety of all communities and residents throughout Kosova.”
The EU also reconfirmed its continued support for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, underscoring that they were established through decisions of the Assembly of Kosovo during 2014-2015.
“Their work is important for ensuring accountability and delivering justice for the victims and their families from all communities in Kosovo, thus contributing to reconciliation,” the EU stressed.
In conclusion, the European Union called for maintaining a climate free from fear and revenge, and for the protection of victims and witnesses.
