El Niño Expected to Reach Unprecedented Levels, 2027 Could Become the Hottest Year on Record

One of the most powerful El Niño episodes recorded in more than a century could develop soon, significantly affecting the global climate and increasing the likelihood that 2027 will record the highest temperatures ever measured.

The assessment was made by Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the UK Meteorological Office, the Met Office. In a statement to the BBC, he said current models are signaling a phenomenon of exceptionally rare intensity.

“I have never seen anything like this in our forecasts,” Scaife said. According to him, El Niño could peak with an increase of more than three degrees in sea-surface temperatures in a reference area of the Pacific Ocean. Such a level, he stressed, would have no precedent in modern climate records.

El Niño is a temporary natural phenomenon that usually occurs every two to seven years. It is caused by significant changes in the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean and affects atmospheric patterns around the world. Some regions may experience heat and drought, while others face heavy rainfall, lower temperatures and extreme weather events.

The most severe consequences are expected in tropical areas. Scaife warned that parts of South America and the western Pacific could be hit by extreme drought.

Europe could also feel the impact of the phenomenon. The British expert said that signs have already been observed indicating that rainfall and storms could become more frequent in the United Kingdom and northwestern Europe, particularly from November.

The Met Office and other climate experts predict that the potential strength of El Niño will significantly affect global temperatures during the coming year.

If these forecasts prove accurate, 2027 could set a new record as the warmest year ever recorded. The impacts are expected to emerge in different regions through heatwaves, droughts, extreme rainfall and more powerful storms.
