Drone attacks near NATO borders, Poland increases security measures with Ukraine

After drone strikes near border crossing points and growing concerns about the security of NATO’s eastern flank, Poland has taken measures to strengthen its defense along the border with Ukraine.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that the infrastructure used by the Border Guard is being reinforced. He said soldiers from the 18th Engineer Regiment have begun work to fortify checkpoints and infrastructure facilities near the Polish-Ukrainian border.

These measures follow two attacks recorded over the weekend. One of them caused damage to a train near the border with Poland. The Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged that the attacks had taken place, claiming the train was transporting military cargo.

Security concerns have also been raised in Lithuania, where a drone entered the country’s airspace and was shot down by a NATO fighter jet. Lithuanian authorities said the drone was carrying an explosive device, which was neutralized, while its origin is still under investigation.

According to Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, it is very likely that the drone came from Russia. However, Lithuanian authorities have stressed that investigations to determine its origin have not yet concluded.

In another incident, Danish authorities said a Danish military helicopter had been targeted by a Russian warship in international waters.

US calls for an end to attacks on energy infrastructure

In a separate development, US President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine have agreed to halt attacks on energy targets. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Kremlin have described the initiative as a proposal, not a final agreement.

Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to support the United States’ proposal if it can serve as the first step toward easing tensions.
