Death of former MP Widdecombe: final interview, terrorism suspicions, and ongoing investigation

A previously undisclosed interview with Ann Widdecombe reveals that she publicly defended Nigel Farage about 20 minutes before British authorities believe she was found lifeless in her home in the Dartmoor area.

The family of the former MP gave permission for this conversation with “Times Radio” to be broadcast. In it, she expressed her stance in favor of Farage’s call for a by-election, a move that came after criticism over a £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency billionaire that he had not declared.

Widdecombe described the investigations Farage was facing over his financial affairs as an example of the “personal destruction” campaign that, according to her, targeted public figures.

“This game of destroying the individual has been going on for a long time, and it’s not just happening to Nigel, but to many other politicians who experience the same thing,” she declared during the interview.

Meanwhile, the circumstances of her death are now being approached from a new angle, after the counter-terrorism unit took over the investigation. This decision came after new data and evidence emerged that raised suspicion of a political motive. A 28-year-old man, who was initially detained on a murder charge, has now been rearrested on suspicion of committing, preparing, or inciting terrorist acts.

According to the investigation timeline, Widdecombe conducted the interview via an online connection around 11:54 on Wednesday and ended it a few minutes after 12:10. It is believed that the murder occurred at her residence around 12:30.

After the conversation ended, she exchanged a few messages with a television producer, but from 12:19 onward there was no further response from her to subsequent contact attempts.

During what would turn out to be her final interview, the former Conservative minister also expressed reservations about the parliamentary system of ethical standards, arguing that the MPs’ register of interests no longer enjoys the same authority as in the past.

Ann Widdecombe has long been a known figure in British politics. After leaving the Conservative Party, she joined Reform UK, where she served as spokesperson for immigration and justice issues.
