Climatologist Warns: This Could Be the Coolest Summer of the Next 300 Years

The extreme heat, violent rainstorms and massive landslides that have swept across the Austrian state of Tyrol are not an isolated episode. For meteorologist and climatologist Andreas Jager, these phenomena signal a new climate reality.

Jager says there has not been a June like that of 2026 since the beginning of the millennium. He considers the latest heatwave, along with that of 2015, to be one of the strongest ever recorded, while more than half of the weather stations measured record temperatures.

“This is probably the coldest summer we will have over the next 300 years,” he told Tirol TV. According to the climatologist, extreme temperatures, powerful storms and other unusual atmospheric phenomena are expected to occur with increasing frequency.

According to Jager, one of the main problems in the future will be water shortages. The decline in snowfall is directly affecting underground water reserves, as the gradual melting of snow is particularly important for replenishing them.

The effects of climate change will also be felt in agriculture. Jager believes the sector must adapt to the new circumstances by implementing different cultivation methods and keeping the soil covered throughout the year. “This way of farming is no longer sustainable,” he said.

He also warned that climate change has not yet reached its peak. “Until we slow this process down, the situation will only get worse,” Jager said, emphasizing the need for societies to begin adapting to the new climate reality.
