Climatologist Warns After Heatwave: This May Be the Coolest Summer of the Next 300 Years

The extreme heat, powerful rainstorms and massive landslides that have struck the Austrian part of Tyrol are not an isolated case. For meteorologist and climatologist Andreas Jager, these phenomena show that we are already facing a new climate reality.

Jager says there has not been a June like that of 2026 since the beginning of the millennium. He considers the latest heatwave, along with that of 2015, to be one of the strongest ever recorded, while more than half of the weather stations measured record temperatures.

In a statement to Tirol TV, the climatologist said this is likely to be the coolest summer that will be experienced in the next 300 years. According to him, extreme heat, violent storms and other unusual atmospheric phenomena will recur with increasing frequency.

According to Jager, one of the most serious problems in the future will be water shortages. The decline in snowfall is directly harming underground water reserves because the slow melting of snow is important for replenishing them.

The effects of climate change will also be felt in agriculture. Jager believes the sector must adapt to the new circumstances by adopting different cultivation methods and keeping the soil covered throughout the year, as current farming practices cannot continue sustainably.

He also warned that climate change has not yet reached its peak. Until this process slows down, the situation will continue to worsen, so societies must begin adapting to the new climate conditions.
