China Raises Flood Alert Near Nepal as Landslides Block Two Rivers and Form New Lake

Chinese authorities have warned of a high risk of further flooding near the border with Nepal, where landslides have led to the formation of a new natural lake.

Collapsed soil and rocks have obstructed the flow of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers. As a result, water is accumulating behind the natural barrier formed by the landslide debris.

By Friday, around 2.5 million cubic meters of water had accumulated in the lake, while rainfall is expected to raise the level further. China is concerned that the pressure could damage the natural barrier, causing the lake to overflow and trigger new flooding accompanied by landslides in surrounding areas.

The alert was issued just days after a powerful flood struck the region, leaving hundreds dead or missing. Scientists estimate that the disaster may have been caused by the collapse of a glacier, which released a large volume of water and debris along the river.

Because of the threat, some rescue operations have been temporarily suspended by the Chinese authorities. At the same time, engineering teams are continuously monitoring the water level and the lake’s stability.

The area is also being monitored by drones, which are being used to detect changes that could signal the cracking or collapse of the barrier. However, the rising water level is not necessarily expected to end in disaster. The water could gradually create a natural outlet from the lake, reducing the pressure and preventing an immediate flood.

Nepal has also taken preventive measures. Authorities have instructed residents not to go near the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, as possible blockages in their flow and rising water levels could cause further flooding.
