China faces the aftermath of Typhoon Maysak, two dead and 48,000 displaced in Guangxi

China has activated the highest alert level for Typhoon Maysak, which has struck the southern Guangxi region with intense rainfall and widespread flooding.

So far, the toll stands at two deaths, while approximately 48,000 residents have been evacuated from areas considered at risk.

Local authorities said the torrential rains caused several dams to collapse in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi. After a dam at the Liulan Reservoir burst, mudslides were triggered, while another dam collapsed at the Yunbiao Reservoir. The Liugang Reservoir also overflowed, further worsening conditions in the surrounding areas.

In Fangchenggang, more than 800 residents have been forced to leave their homes because of flooding. At the same time, water levels have exceeded the warning threshold at 66 hydrological stations along 55 rivers in Guangxi.

Official data show that 637 millimeters of rain fell in the Luwei area in just 24 hours, causing flash floods and extensive damage.

Although Maysak weakened into a storm after entering Chinese territory, authorities have warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Guangxi and across much of southern China in the coming days.

To manage the situation, 1,372 additional rescue teams and 140 boats have been deployed, and are being used in evacuation operations and to assist affected residents.
