At least 10 people were killed and more than 60 others injured in a fireworks explosion at a church in Mexico during celebrations for the Day of the Patron Saint, authorities said Sunday.

The tragic incident occurred Saturday evening in the Santa Maria Cantata community, in the State of Mexico. According to the government, the fireworks sparked a fire in a parish building used as a storage facility, setting off the explosives stored inside.
Footage released by local media shows that the explosion occurred as dozens of people gathered in front of the church to celebrate the burning of a traditional “bull” filled with fireworks, which residents had brought on a cart.
Immediately after the powerful explosion, flames engulfed the community square, while participants fled in panic to escape the fire.
