On Sunday, October 11, Trump said on his Truth Social platform that both sides had agreed to suspend strikes on energy infrastructure and that the ceasefire would take effect immediately.
When the news was made public, Russia had issued no official response. The terms of the alleged agreement, as well as the period for which it would apply, were also unclear.
According to The Kyiv Independent, Igor Ananskikh, a Russian lawmaker and deputy chairman of the State Duma’s Energy Committee, said he was unaware of the ceasefire mentioned by the US president.
Ananskikh questioned whether Trump’s statement referred to a concrete agreement, while suggesting that such announcements could affect oil prices.
Although the lawmaker’s position does not represent an official Kremlin statement, it added to uncertainty over whether Russia and Ukraine had actually reached a joint agreement.
Reuters also reported that the announcement had not been immediately confirmed by Moscow or Kyiv, while the White House provided no further details about its content.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said Ukraine would halt attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow also suspended strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
In an interview with the US media outlet Axios, Zelensky said Trump’s announcement was new to him. However, he said Kyiv would accept the ceasefire if Russia made the same commitment.
In a public statement, the Ukrainian president welcomed the US initiative and expressed hope that it would also be implemented on the ground.
Kyiv has repeatedly called on Russia to stop attacks on power plants, gas facilities and other vital infrastructure. At the same time, Ukraine has continued using drones against refineries and oil facilities on Russian territory.
