Canadian Wildfires Continue as Military Evacuates Fort Hope Residents; Smoke Reaches US

Canadian authorities have deployed the military to evacuate residents from high-risk areas as Canada continues to grapple with the consequences of major wildfires.

The Canadian Armed Forces have begun an air evacuation mission for around 600 residents of Fort Hope, an isolated community in northwestern Ontario. In this area, the flames continue to spread rapidly.

In the past 24 hours, 69 new fires have been recorded, according to Canadian authorities. This has brought the number of active fires nationwide to 955. So far, thousands of residents have been removed from the affected areas and taken to safer cities in southern Ontario.

The effects of the fires have also been felt outside Canada. Thick clouds of smoke have spread into several US states, where the relevant agencies have warned of declining air quality. Citizens, especially the most vulnerable groups, have been urged to reduce time spent and activities outdoors.

Climate experts say forest fires are occurring with increasing frequency in Canada, as high temperatures and drought have created favourable conditions for their spread. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing operations to contain the flames and are closely monitoring the situation.
