Cambridge Professor Steps Down Following Plagiarism and Academic Inaccuracy Allegations

Jason Arday has announced his resignation as a professor at the University of Cambridge amid allegations of plagiarism and inaccurate claims about his academic qualifications.

His decision was made public after the University of Cambridge said it had launched a new investigation following the receipt of further information relating to his academic background.

Arday, who in 2023 became the youngest Black professor in the history of the University of Cambridge, has acknowledged that some of his academic papers contained errors. However, he has firmly denied engaging in deception.

The professor said he had long been under pressure from a relentless campaign of personal attacks and excessive media exposure.

In his resignation statement, Arday described his appointment at Cambridge as the greatest professional achievement of his life, but stressed that the personal toll created by the situation had become unbearable.

According to Arday, his resignation is not linked to any disillusionment with scientific research or the university’s principles. He described the move as the only way to bring a particularly difficult period to an end.

Arday thanked students and colleagues for their support and said he needed time to recover. He added that he intends to return to academic work in the future.

The controversy surrounding him erupted after American researcher Nathan Cofnas published claims that parts of Arday’s doctoral thesis contained passages taken from other sources with only minor changes.

Liverpool John Moores University, the institution that awarded him his doctorate in 2015, had previously conducted an investigation into similar allegations. It ultimately found insufficient evidence to substantiate the plagiarism claims.

During a recent interview, Arday acknowledged that some inaccuracies in his early work were genuine and took responsibility for them, but insisted that he is not a liar.

He also said that, since his appointment at Cambridge, he had been targeted by an organized campaign aimed at removing him from his post. According to Arday, the attacks may be racially motivated and linked to debates over diversity, equality and inclusion policies at universities.

The professor has said that autism affected the way he learned and processed information during the early years of his career. He believes this may have contributed to some errors in citations and references.

In addition to the plagiarism issue, questions have also been raised about some of Arday’s personal claims, including athletic challenges and the substantial sums raised for charity.

He has explained that the money was raised over a 20-year period with contributions from many other people. He has also said that some athletic records were inaccurately reported publicly.

The University of Cambridge has confirmed that it is reviewing not only the professor’s qualifications but also other complaints relating to possible research misconduct, in accordance with the institution’s rules. A separate procedure has also been opened by Jesus College, where Arday was a member.

Simon & Schuster, which is expected to publish Arday’s autobiography this month, has said it continues to support the professor. The publisher praised his professionalism and integrity throughout their collaboration.

Some professors have criticized elite universities, claiming that such appointments have been influenced by efforts to promote diversity and improve their public image. Other academics have rejected this view, arguing that Black researchers face numerous barriers and do not receive preferential treatment at higher education institutions.
