Berisha Supports Protesters’ Demands: DP in Favor of Limiting the Prime Minister’s Term to Two Mandates

During a statement to the media this Wednesday, the head of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, also commented on the protests being held in Tirana, focusing on the five demands made public two days earlier by Dritan Goxhaj.

In response to journalists’ questions, Berisha said that one of the first demands is the immediate removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama, which, according to him, is fully supported by the Democratic Party without any hesitation.

He stated that the DP is also in full support of the proposal to limit the prime minister’s term to two mandates, stressing that this political force is ready to vote for such an initiative as early as tomorrow.

“Among the demands read out and presented by Goxhaj is the immediate resignation of Edi Rama. This is a demand that we support without any reservation, strongly, and we make the same call. Secondly, among the first five demands, there is the limitation of the prime minister’s term to two mandates. The Democratic Party fully agrees. Fully agrees! As early as tomorrow, it is ready to vote in parliament and call on citizens to vote for such a measure.

Why this? Because it became clear that Edi Rama does not allow the rotation of power. He does not allow it. And this is not just because we say so; international documents now say so as well. Then there is wisdom in having the Constitution define it, having the Constitution remove it.

And let me say one thing as well: as prime minister, if you work on a program, eight years are absolutely enough. I am not saying for its 100% implementation, but for implementing its main points and carrying it out to the extent of 80-90%.

So, what stands in Edi Rama’s case is that he remains in power without elections. With an electoral farce, with an electoral farce. And I understand that the protesters want to give such an answer through a change to the Constitution.

As for the other laws, Berisha said that the DP’s position has been clear and publicly known. According to him, this party has opposed those laws more than any other force, pursuing every possible procedural avenue against them, including amendments to the law on the protection of protected areas, cultural heritage, concessions, PPPs, and strategic investments,” he said.
