Berisha criticizes government over high fuel prices: A tax that does not exist anywhere else

Democratic Party Chairman Sali Berisha has sharply criticized the government over the high price of fuel in Albania, declaring that fuel is sold at an unaffordable cost relative to wages.

According to him, the high price is directly linked to the tax imposed by the state on every liter of fuel, amounting to around 1.1 euros.

“It would not be tolerated anywhere in the world. At 220 lek per liter, fuel is the most expensive in the world relative to wages. Even in nominal terms, it is one of the highest prices in the world. The fundamental cause of fuel prices at this level is the state’s tax of 1.1 euros on each liter of fuel.

A tax that does not exist anywhere else. Kosovo and North Macedonia have half the tax imposed by Albania, and fuel there is always 500–600 lek cheaper than in Albania. We have pledged that, at the first meeting of a Democratic Party government, we will halve the fuel tax, and a liter of fuel in Albania will not be sold at a higher price than in Kosovo and North Macedonia,” he said.
