Bekim Sejdiu, the name discussed in Kurti-Abdixhiku meetings for President

Negotiations over the election of Kosovo’s President appear to have brought a new candidacy to the fore.

Sources report that Bekim Sejdiu, a former judge of the Constitutional Court, was seriously discussed during talks between Albin Kurti and Lumir Abdixhiku.

A possible agreement on his name is believed to have been reached at Wednesday’s meeting. However, the two leaders met again tonight, in a meeting that had not been announced earlier.

It has not yet become clear whether today’s talks led to any change in the parties’ positions.

Sejdiu’s name is linked to one of the most important political decisions of recent years. He served as the reporting judge in case KO95/20 before the Constitutional Court, a ruling that resulted in the dismissal of Avdullah Hoti’s government.

It is precisely this past that could make his candidacy sensitive for some LDK lawmakers, who may hesitate to support the former judge.

After the latest meeting, Kurti did not provide details about what had been discussed.

“When we have results on our side, we will have news for you,” he briefly told reporters.

Kurti and Abdixhiku have met several times in an effort to find a solution for the election of the President. After the previous meeting, both sides described the situation as “a step forward” and confirmed that specific candidacies had been mentioned in the talks.

If Bekim Sejdiu is the name on which an agreement has been reached, the difficult step will be securing the necessary support in the Assembly.

The Assembly remains unconstituted, while the constitutional deadline for its constitution expired on August 7.

Vetëvendosje has stated that it has the votes to constitute the Assembly, but has requested that there also be an agreement on the President.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have accused VV of undermining the constitutional order.

Under these circumstances, Bekim Sejdiu’s candidacy has become one of the names that could influence the resolution of Kosovo’s institutional deadlock.
