Barbara Broccoli reveals anguish after 10 years of stalking: I was forced to sell the family home

Barbara Broccoli, a key figure for decades in steering the famous James Bond film saga, has revealed that after stalking that lasted nearly 10 years, she was forced to sell the family home and now lives in constant fear.

The statement became public after a court in London ruled that Daniel Wilson, 37, be sent indefinitely to a psychiatric hospital after he was found guilty of serious stalking and of breaching a non-contact order involving Broccoli.

According to the court, Wilson, who lives in Lambeth, London, had repeatedly and distressingly contacted the producer, sending her hundreds of WhatsApp messages, emails and voice messages through different phone numbers.

The prosecution described his behavior as a “relentless and disturbing campaign,” while stressing that the messages ranged from bizarre content to sexual and threatening material.

During a court hearing last year, Wilson drew public attention when he shouted, “James Bond cannot have died,” referring to the end of the character in the film “No Time to Die,” in which Daniel Craig played Agent 007 for the last time.

The court heard that he had breached the non-contact order after leaving threatening voice messages for Broccoli from a hospital ward on Valentine’s Day last year. He had also shared a sexually explicit post on social media that included the producer’s name and contact details.

In her testimony before the court, Barbara Broccoli said the stalking had left serious consequences in both her personal and professional life.

“He has caused great anxiety and distress. It is something that eats away at you. It has undermined my confidence and affected my wellbeing. I live in constant fear for my personal safety, I am always on alert and looking over my shoulder,” she said.

She also said that, out of fear of the stalker, she had been forced to sell the family home, where she had lived for 20 years. According to her, the distress was so severe that she had even begun to fear attending public events, including film premieres, because of the possibility that Wilson might appear there.

The court learned that the initial connection between Wilson and Broccoli came after he became friends with her son during secondary school. After that friendship ended in 2009, he developed an obsession with the producer.

In one episode, he sent a bronze bust of her father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, to the door of her home. Her father was the producer who brought James Bond to the screen in the 1960s. He later demanded payment for the bust and claimed he had contributed to the script of the 2012 film “Skyfall.”

In 2016, Wilson forced his way into the producer’s home in London, causing major property damage. At the time, two of Broccoli’s friends were forced to barricade themselves in a room until police arrived. The producer herself was not at the home at that moment.

After that incident, a restraining order was imposed on Wilson in 2017, prohibiting him from contacting Broccoli.

Judge Christopher Hehir ordered that Wilson be detained indefinitely in a psychiatric hospital, in accordance with British mental health law.

“You have deep mental health problems dating back many years. The impact of your behavior on Barbara Broccoli has been very great. Your prolonged conduct has undermined her confidence and made her feel distressed, frightened and unsafe,” the judge said.

During the hearing, Wilson interrupted proceedings several times and shouted: “What about the bronze bust? Stop talking like this. I made Barbara a sculpture and she did not pay me.”

He then asked: “How can this be a delusion?”, before the video link was cut off.

Barbara Broccoli is considered one of the most important figures in the history of James Bond. Her father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, bought the rights to Ian Fleming’s novels in 1961.

She became involved in production at the age of 17 and in 1995 became the producer of the film “GoldenEye,” in which Pierce Brosnan appeared as James Bond for the first time. For many years, she ran the franchise together with her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, until the rights to the series were sold to Amazon last year.

The ruling on Wilson comes after one of the most difficult personal periods for the producer, who for decades has been one of the most powerful figures behind one of world cinema’s best-known brands.
