Australia has been shaken by a horrific incident in which a 32-year-old woman is accused of taking the life of her 4-year-old son and is suspected of consuming parts of his body.

According to court documents, authorities suspect the crime took place on July 4, between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The woman has been arrested and is facing a murder charge. Her request for bail has been denied, while the case will return for review at Wyong Magistrates Court on September 1. The case is under investigation by Australian authorities and has raised serious questions about the role of social services, which had been in contact with the family even before the tragedy.

Australian media report that on Saturday the 32-year-old appeared at a police station in Wyong, in the Central Coast region of the state of New South Wales, where she is suspected of telling officers that she had consumed parts of her child’s body.

Following this statement, police went to the apartment where the mother and son lived, where they discovered the lifeless body of the 4-year-old with severe wounds to his hands. Preliminary investigations indicate that the child had died several days before authorities were made aware.

The family had moved to that area about five months earlier in order to escape a situation of domestic violence. Despite this, New South Wales social services had been monitoring the case for at least a year due to concerns about the mother’s mental condition and suspicions of narcotics use.
