At Least 38 Killed and 29 Wounded in Houthi Missile and Drone Attacks on Yemeni Army

At least 38 members of Yemen’s government army were killed and 29 others wounded in a series of missile and drone strikes claimed by the Houthi rebels.

Medical sources cited by AFP confirmed that at least 38 soldiers were killed and 29 wounded. This is the highest casualty toll since 2022, when a ceasefire between the parties took effect.

According to a military official, the strikes targeted a camp in Marib province in central Yemen, as well as other positions in Hadramout, near the border with Saudi Arabia.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sareh said that “our armed forces carried out a large-scale operation against concentrations of enemy troops.” He accused government forces of increasing their military presence.

The Houthis say hundreds of Saudi-backed fighters were killed or wounded during the operation, while camps, weapons depots and military vehicles were destroyed. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

The U.S. diplomatic mission in Yemen offered its condolences to the families of the soldiers who were killed and described the attack as another act of violence carried out by the Houthi rebels.

The war in Yemen broke out in 2014 after the Houthis seized control of most of the country, including the capital, Sana’a, and forced government forces to retreat. A Saudi-led military coalition subsequently intervened to support the internationally recognized government.

After several years of relative calm, fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces has intensified again amid broader tensions in the region.

At the same time, the Houthis have continued their maritime operations in the Red Sea. They claim these actions are a response to Saudi Arabia’s measures against Yemen, allegations that Riyadh has rejected.
