Another shipment of expired meat bound for Kosovo stopped at the Port of Bar

A container carrying expired beef bound for Kosovo was stopped by Montenegrin authorities at the Port of Bar on Thursday.

According to the Customs Administration of Montenegro, the shipment belonged to the Kosovo-based company “Apetiti SHPK” and consisted of 1,321 packages of frozen beef. Its gross weight was 24,650 kilograms.

Inspection revealed that the product’s expiration date was May 14, 2026.

Following the finding, the case was referred to the veterinary inspector and the Police Directorate, which are pursuing the relevant procedures within their legal powers.

This is the second incident in 10 days involving meat from this company at the Port of Bar. On September 15, Montenegrin authorities announced that they had blocked three containers of beef, with a total gross weight of 77,841.03 kilograms.

Montenegro’s Customs Administration said that during that inspection, it had been observed that the original declarations stating the expired shelf life had been removed and replaced with other documents showing an altered use-by date.

Once the remaining legal procedures are concluded, the meat seized in the three containers is expected to be destroyed.

Montenegrin customs authorities also said that, in communication with the customs administrations of neighboring countries, they had received information about irregularities linked to this company at the Port of Durrës as well. The information has been forwarded to the responsible customs administrations.

The World Customs Organization has also been informed of the cases, so that other customs administrations can be warned about this attempted method of distributing meat.

According to calculations by Montenegro’s Customs Administration, the two cases involved the blocking of beef in transit with a total gross weight of 102,491.03 kilograms, or approximately 103 tons.
