Albulena Haxhiu: Defending former KLA leaders is not done by labeling opponents as “spies” and “traitors

Kosovo’s Acting President and Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, has reacted to the latest developments related to the judgment against former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

In a post published on Facebook, Haxhiu stated that supporting the former KLA leaders constitutes a civic and institutional responsibility. However, she said this cannot be used as a reason to attack political opponents, witnesses or citizens of Kosovo.

She stressed that no one defends the KLA by immediately declaring those with opposing political views “spies” and “traitors,” or by seeking culprits among citizens.

Haxhiu criticized the use of these labels at rallies, on television programs and in public posts, saying that such behavior repeats the logic behind the accusations brought against the former KLA leaders.

According to her, labeling an opponent as an enemy and turning that person into a target of attack does not strengthen the defense, but instead serves the narrative of the prosecution.

Haxhiu underscored that an entire people cannot be considered a source of “spying,” since the evidence concerns specific individuals who have names and personal responsibility. She warned that such an approach is untrue, insulting and dangerous, as it incites fear, lynching and division.

She called on all people who have information about individuals who have harmed or are harming the national and state interest to submit it as soon as possible to the security and justice authorities, so that the cases can be fully addressed.

“No injustice is corrected through another injustice,” Haxhiu wrote, adding that the values of the KLA’s war are defended through truth, justice and dignity, not through slander and threats.

In conclusion, the Acting President called on all individuals who act or appear publicly to show restraint and reflect the values and virtues that characterize society and the nation.
