Albania Above NATO Threshold, US Praises Its Role in Defending the Alliance

As transatlantic relations enter a new phase of strategic review and Washington seeks greater responsibility from allies in carrying the weight of collective security, Albania stands out among the countries that not only meet but exceed the standards set by NATO.

The political signal coming from the United States is direct: in the new security framework, what will matter in relations with allies is concrete contribution.

During an interview by the US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, with Fox News, a chart was published reflecting the military spending of alliance countries for the 2014–2025 period.

In this overview, Albania is listed with $570.3 million dedicated to defense, placing it among the states that share in the common security burden.

In the same interview, Whitaker stressed the weight of allies’ commitment on the operational and strategic level.

“I think most of our allies, in fact all of our allies in NATO, are giving us the bases, access and air support that we need,” he declared.

This statement comes as the US administration is conducting a broad review of its military presence in Europe, analyzing not only the deployment of troops and bases, but also the level of cooperation with allied countries.

For NATO, however, the key element is not linked only to the absolute size of budgets, but to their ratio to Gross Domestic Product. The alliance’s minimum threshold is 2% of GDP, a target that Albania not only meets, but exceeds.

According to the 2026 Normative Budget Act, approved recently, total defense spending reaches 2.6% of GDP, while core defence spending amounts to 2.2%, above the alliance’s minimum threshold.

The act also provides for further increases in defense capacities, through the addition of 300 new military personnel and an increase of 10.3 billion lek for investments and operations.

Albania’s inclusion in the chart published during the US ambassador’s interview, together with the fact that according to official documents the country stands above NATO’s minimum standard, strengthens its position as a reliable, active and significant ally in the euro-atlantic security architecture.
