Alarm in Britain: Iran-Linked Cyberattack Shut Down Power Plant for Four Days

A power plant in Britain was forced to suspend operations for four days following a cyberattack believed to have been carried out by hackers linked to Iran, The Telegraph reported.

The incident occurred in July and is considered one of the most serious cyberattacks on Britain’s energy infrastructure. The Telegraph has not disclosed the name of the plant, while available information indicates that it was a small-capacity facility. As a result, the shutdown had no impact on the operation of the electricity grid.

The report noted that this is the first time hackers linked to Iran have managed to shut down a British power plant for such an extended period.

The incident came amid other attempted attacks on critical infrastructure in the United States, including water management systems. The developments have heightened concerns among U.S. and British authorities over the escalating cyber threat to vital infrastructure.

British and U.S. intelligence services have repeatedly issued warnings about the activities of hacker groups linked to Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. According to the agencies, these groups target government institutions and critical infrastructure.

Previous cyberattacks have caused disruptions to systems at Britain’s National Health Service, schools and industrial facilities. Jaguar Land Rover has also been among the companies targeted, while foreign hacker groups have gained access to customer data held by British retail companies, as well as Electoral Commission voter data.
