He made these comments during tributes held at the memorial dedicated to members of the Kosovo Police who lost their lives in the line of duty, on the day marking the anniversary of the fall of hero Enver Zymberi.
In his speech, Kurti noted that the day had started with another commemorative ceremony. “Together with the acting President, Mrs. Albulena Haxhiu, we began the morning with tributes at the grave of Adem Demaçi, the symbol of resistance, our Mandela and Europe’s, who spent 28 years in Yugoslav and Serbian prisons. Today we mark the eighth anniversary of his passing,” he said.
Then he continued with the visit to the police memorial. “From there we came here to honor those who fell in the line of duty, together with the Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, the Police Director, Gazmend Hoxha, and other colleagues from the executive and police ranks,” Kurti added.
Speaking about the specific case, the acting Prime Minister recalled the sacrifice of Enver Zymberi. “This date marks the 15th anniversary of his murder, while he was enforcing the laws of the Republic, protecting territorial integrity, and ensuring peace and rights for all citizens without distinction. Unfortunately, he was fatally struck by the criminal hand of Serbia’s mechanisms.”
He appreciated that Zymberi’s sacrifice left a powerful legacy. “Since then, we honor Enver Zymberi as a hero of our statehood and independence. His fall became a source of inspiration for many members of the Kosovo Police, both for those in service and for the generations who joined the force later,” Kurti declared.
Further, he also mentioned other serious challenges the police have faced. “In addition to the murders of Enver Zymberi and Afrim Bunjaku, a major blow to the Kosovo Police was the collective withdrawal of about 550 police officers from the Serb community on November 5, 2022, ordered by Belgrade,” Kurti recalled.
Nevertheless, he stressed that these efforts did not achieve their goal. “Their objective failed. The multiethnic character of our Police was not destroyed, and neither state sovereignty, nor territorial integrity, nor institutional resilience were compromised, as was their aim,” he concluded.
