After the death of Giorgos Mazonakis, Greek scientists raise alarm over ‘anti-aging’ therapies

The sudden death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis has prompted two prominent Greek scientists in the fields of biology and medicine to warn citizens about unverified treatments advertised as ‘regenerative’ or ‘anti-aging’.

According to them, the public can easily be influenced by the claims that accompany medical procedures presented with these labels.

Scientist Maria Gazouli urged people not to be seduced by the terminology used. She asked that before choosing a treatment, one should verify whether it has been properly evaluated and whether the relevant regulatory authorities have approved it for the specific medical indication.

Gazouli stressed that it should also be checked whether there is sufficient scientific evidence proving the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

She called on the competent authorities to exercise systematic control over procedures promoted as medical treatments, especially when providers advertise them directly to citizens.

‘Science relies on evidence, transparency and accountability, not on impressions and easy promises,’ she stated.

Referring to her experience on the Committee for Advanced Therapies at the EMA, Gazouli recalled that this committee had expressed concerns about similar issues several years ago.

According to her, only scientific evidence and strong regulatory oversight enable the distinction between a promising therapeutic method and a promise with commercial intent.
