After 25 Years in Politics, Ali Ahmeti Considers Stepping Down

Ali Ahmeti, leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), has revealed that he is considering leaving active politics after more than two decades on the political scene.

During an interview on RTV21’s Click program, Ahmeti spoke about both his future and developments within the party. He acknowledged that, after a 25-year career in active politics, he has been thinking increasingly often about retirement.

Ahmeti said this is something he personally thinks about, while his fellow leaders and colleagues tell him it is still too early whenever he mentions it to them. According to him, after more than 45 years of activity, the idea is only natural, as life has not been easy for those who opposed the Yugoslav regime to reach the present day.

Describing this journey as going “from the refrigerator to the radiator,” he said such changes cause problems for the body. Ahmeti stressed that they, too, would like to experience the lives of ordinary citizens and have greater freedom of movement, as his current daily life revolves around his home, party headquarters, and political activities.

However, Ahmeti’s fellow party members believe that the time for his departure has not yet come and that his continued involvement in politics remains essential.

Speaking about personnel changes within the DUI, he said that the party’s leadership structures have already undergone significant renewal. According to Ahmeti, more than 83 percent of its leaders are new appointees and young people.

The possibility of Ali Ahmeti leaving politics has also been mentioned before, with such speculation surfacing several times in public, INA reports.
